چکیده

Measurements were undertaken to determine the unknown microbubble-size distribution of a dodecafluoropentane (DDFP) emulsion consisting of 10 droplets/ml in surfactant-stabilized water. The acoustic backscatter of 2-microsecond-duration tonebursts of 30-MHz focused ultrasound was measured from the emulsion as it moved in a coaxial flow. Calibration for the system was accomplished using 3-mm-radius polystyrene spheres, using a linear scattering model and literature values for polystyrene. Applying viscous linear scattering theory to the backscatter data from individual DDFP bubbles allowed inversion of the radius–backscatter relation. A mean microbubble radius of 130 nm was inferred for the DDFP population. © 2005 Acoustical Society of America PACS numbers: 43.30.Gv, 43.35.Yb, 43.80.Vj Date Received: January 23, 2005 Date Accepted: April 29, 2005

The measurement of ultrasound scattering from individual micron-sized objects and its application in single cell scattering.

The measurement of the ultrasound backscatter from individual micron-sized objects such as cells is required for various applications such as tissue characterization. However, performing such a measurement remains a challenge. For example, the presence of air bubbles in a suspension of cells during the measurements may lead to the incorrect interpretation of the acoustic signals. This work intr...

Acoustic backscatter properties of the particle/bubble ultrasound contrast agent.

Bubble-based suspensions with diameters in the 1-5 microns range have been developed for use as ultrasound contrast agents. Bubbles of these dimensions have resonance frequencies in the diagnostic ultrasonic range, thus improving their backscatter enhancement capabilities. The durability of these bubbles in the blood stream has been found to be limited, providing impetus for a number of approac...

The high-frequency backscattering angular response of gassy sediments: model/data comparison from the Eel River Margin, California.

A model for the high-frequency backscatter angular response of gassy sediments is proposed. For the interface backscatter contribution we adopted the model developed by Jackson et al. [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 79, 1410-1422 (1986)], but added modifications to accommodate gas bubbles. The model parameters that are affected by gas content are the density ratio, the sound speed ratio, and the loss para...

Technical Note: Detection of gas bubble leakage via correlation of water column multibeam images

Hydroacoustic detection of natural gas release from the seafloor has been conducted in the past by using singlebeam echosounders. In contrast, modern multibeam swath mapping systems allow much wider coverage, higher resolution, and offer 3-D spatial correlation. Up to the present, the extremely high data rate hampers water column backscatter investigations and more sophisticated visualization a...

The dependence of ultrasonic attenuation and backscatter on collagen content in dog and rabbit hearts.

To determine whether collagen content may be a determinant of the ultrasonic attenuation and backscatter in myocardium and to identify factors in the measurement of the backscatter coefficient needed for ultrasonic characterization of myocardium in vivo, two series of experiments were conducted. In the first series, the ultrasonic attenuation was measured from 110 regions in 18 dogs studied 2, ...
